7 Years of Kindred Accounting - Here’s What We’ve Learned.
On April 10, 2018 Kindred Accounting started in the spare room of Andrew & Elyse Haynes house.
The past 7 years have had many many ups, a few downs, some blood sweat and tears. The journey of a business owner can be wild and wooly but in the accounting industry it’s assumed you are an expert at business.
While we know a lot - there has been a lot to learn too.
Business Will Always Have Challenges
Actually business will always be hard. We choose to see it like working out - every time we exercise, if it’s not challenging or stretching, we’re not getting stronger or fitter.
Business is the same, if your business is growing there will be growing pains, and thats ok. The way to manage it well is to use it as a growing experience.
It might hurt a little, but we’re learning and growing with the pain.
It’s Ok to Get it Wrong Sometimes.
You have to start somewhere - done is better than not and gives you room to steer - a stationery vehicle is pretty hard to direct. Getting started is often the hardest part but once you’re moving, you’re likely to gain momentum.
Just start the project imperfectly, fight your need for it to be perfect and tweak it from there.
Do it Scared.
“No one ever tells you that bravery feels like fear."
- Mary Kate Teske
You don’t feel brave when you do the things that make you scared.
When we started Kindred Accounting we had no income to rely on and no guaranteed business - just a wish, a prayer and the belief that we could run a business without sacrificing our relationships with our kids and each other.
It. Was. Scary…. but it was worth it. You can do it!! We believe in you!
There’s Always More to Learn.
We’re business accountants - we help business owners run their businesses for a living and there is the expectation that we know it all sometimes.
We don’t.
We know a lot, sure, but there is literally always more to learn. If a tree isn’t growing, it’s dying, and if you’re not learning…? Well, you’re likely going to be in a spot of bother sooner or later. Find someone to teach you and guide you, someone who has walked the path you want to head down to some degree and go after your goals.
Don’t Lose Sight of The Bigger Picture.
Business goals shift and change as your business grows and that can be a really beautiful thing, But as you grow keep the main thing the main thing.
We went into business to spend more time with our kids and you know what? That’s actually a constant battle. Work gets really busy.
The wrestle between working a lot and working enough to justify another employee can be tough! And then once you’ve made the decision to bring someone on board, finding them and waiting for them to start can be really really hard.
Keeping the goal in mind helps keep the focus - don’t let yourself lose sight of the bigger picture and why you went into business in the first place.
This Is Not a Sales Pitch. We’re Just Happy You’re Here - THANK YOU.
